Hair loss is a lot more common than you think. In fact, nearly everyone will experience
hair loss at some time in his or her life. It's just a matter of when the hair loss will happen and how much.
There are many causes of hair loss, some of them are
temporary and some are permanent. Here are a few examples of
different causes of hair loss.
Genetic thinning
Male and female pattern baldness accounts for 95 % of hair loss
in people. Hair loss attributed to genetic factors; can often be
"patchy" with particular severity in one or two areas of the
head
Alopecia
Considered to be an auto-immune disease of the hair. It can
range from mild patchy hair loss on the scalp, to total loss of
hair on scalp to total loss of hair on scalp and body hair.
There are no cures for alopecia, only treatments.
Drugs and surgery
Through drug side-effects, brain surgery, cancer treatments,
cosmetic surgery etc.
Trichotillomania
Damage or loss caused by compulsive hair-pulling and twisting,
with increased severity during times of emotional stress
Accidental damage
Including burns, malicious assault, trauma
Chemical damage
Often caused by home coloring, perms or over-use of chemicals.
Can also be caused by the use of relaxers in Afro-Caribbean
hair.
